Title: Policy Officer
Start Date: ASAP
Duration: Initially until 28/12/2021 with possible extension to June 2022


Primary purpose of the role
Coordinate and undertake programs, projects and activities research and provide advice in relation to alcohol and other drugs, public health organisations, and related government agencies.
Support and contribute to policies, strategies and activities in relation to the effective implementation of alcohol and other drugs policy and programs through strategic direction setting; policy development; funding and performance monitoring and program evaluation. To provide policy advice to support the achievement objectives in relation to drug and alcohol clinical policy and programs, with a particular focus on quality and safety frameworks within the health system.

Essential requirements
 Demonstrated experience in the provision of alcohol and other drugs (or related population health area) advice in a complex and multi-disciplinary environment.
 Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of contemporary alcohol and other drugs issues including the application of the legislation and relevant clinical policies.
 Appropriate tertiary qualifications and /or demonstrated relevant, equivalent professional experience.

Key accountabilities
 Undertake components of alcohol and other drugs activities, clinical policies and projects to contribute to the work of alcohol and other drugs programs
 Provide advice and support to interpret and apply policies, procedures relevant to alcohol and other drugs program delivery and clinical policy development
 Assist in the preparation of high quality written advice in the form of reports, briefs, policy, discussion papers or circulars to inform or respond to requests.
 Liaise with key staff in staff, public health organisations and stakeholder representatives to communicate position, objectives, and priorities.
 Participate in qualitative and quantitative research to assist with addressing alcohol and other drugs policy issues and informing policy development.
 Contribute to the development of alcohol and other drugs related program and policy implementation in order to maximise the achievement of goals and needs.

Key challenges
 Completing projects and providing well-researched and balanced advice within agreed timeframes and performance standards whilst also managing a fluctuating workload of other tasks.
 Maintaining familiarity with a range of current policy and initiatives impacting on Branch, so that projects and policy advice reflect current knowledge and best practice.
 Developing effective working relationships with public health organisations, stakeholder representatives, and alcohol and other drugs treatment service agencies given diverse needs and viewpoints.
