Job Description

The Australian Cyber Security Centre, Australian Signals Directorate is seeking a Data Platform Engineer.
The Morrison Government is further boosting Australia’s cyber defences to ensure our essential networks are even more secure and reliable. The CESAR package ensures we can identify more cyber threats, disrupt more cybercriminals offshore, build more partnerships with industry and government and protect more Australians.
These additional measures will enhance cyber protections for critical infrastructure facilities, strengthen our partnerships with industry and boost the provision of cyber security advice to families, older Australians and small businesses.
The successful applicant will apply agile methods to their work enabling their data engineer and cyber security analyst peers to work together more efficiently and effectively.
Applicants should have exposure across several of the following technologies and disciplines, and be able to demonstrate how they used them to generate business value:
- Elasticsearch (Elastic Stack or Open Distro)
- Data streaming technologies (Kafka, NiFi, Spark)
- Software development (Python, Scala, Java)
- Automation services (CI/CD platforms, Ansible, Puppet, Chef)
- Operating systems (Linux)

Skills and Knowledge required / Major Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrated technical experience with Elasticsearch to deliver high speed search capabilities across large data assets.
  • Highly developed technical skills across the build and optimisation of big data cyber security platforms covering the entire stack (hardware, Linux OS and applications).
  • Experience designing, building, and supporting data lake technologies ensuring role-based access controls are enforced and audit is captured.
Desirable criteria
  • High level of proficiency with design and build of observable data ingestion pipelines including serialisation, transformation, enrichment and store.
  • High attention to detail with solid documentation skills and good client communication skills
  • Able to manage multiple, concurrent tasks with competing demand
Location of work: Canberra
Length of contract: 12 months that includes an initial 3 month probation
Contract extensions: 12 months subject to an Organisational Suitability Assessment and funds availability
Security Requirements: Due to the nature of work we require a current NV1.
Psychological Assessment - to be eligible for this role, the preferred applicant may be required to undergo a Psychological Assessment (PA). If the applicant is found unsuitable as part of the PA, they will not be able to commence in the role, even if they are found suitable in every other respect.
