About the Role
As a Senior Data and Research Data Engineer, you will be instrumental in designing, developing, and deploying data engineering solutions that support Defence operations. This APS 6-equivalent position involves solving complex data challenges, building and maintaining data pipelines, and enabling advanced analytics through robust data infrastructure.
You will work closely with stakeholders to deliver tailored recommendations, ensure ethical and secure data usage, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives. The role also includes representing the team at technical and non-technical forums and mentoring junior staff.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Structuring and solving complex data engineering problems
  • Developing and testing scalable data solutions
  • Building and maintaining data pipelines and analytical environments
  • Ensuring compliance with data governance and security standards
  • Providing expert advice on data interoperability, storage, and transmission
  • Advocating for the team’s work across various platforms

The Successful Candidate
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
  • A relevant Bachelor’s degree (e.g., IT, Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics)
  • Strong understanding of analytics software and programming fundamentals
  • Experience in business intelligence, data engineering, data management, and modelling (SFIA Level 3–5)
  • Proven ability to plan and execute quality assurance and measurement strategies
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • A current Top Secret Positive Vetting (TSPV) clearance is mandatory. Candidates with a Defence Intelligence Agency-recognised Organisational Suitability Assessment (OSA) are highly preferred.
Candidates must be willing to undergo the agency’s OSA process, which includes a psychological assessment covering personal, financial, and health-related topics.

  • Contract Duration: Initial 12 months with two 12-month extension options

Location: The role is based in Canberra ACT or Melbourne, VIC.
Contract terms: 12 months from commencement date, plus potential extensions
SFIA level required: The Specified Person will be expected to demonstrate attributes of SFIA Level of Responsibility 5.
Security Requirements: Current Top-Secret Positive Vetting (TSPV) security clearance is strongly preferred, however candidates who have held a TSPV in the previous 12-month period (which has since been downgraded) may be considered. An OSA(Organisational Suitability Assessment) will be required for this position.
