Assistant Director

The Role:
This role will be responsible for overseeing the development, preparation and maintenance of high-quality program documentation including briefings, decision papers, presentations, plans and reporting artefacts. This will include analysis and evaluation of progress, identifying risks, and developing intervention procedures or mitigation measures where required.  
The role requires strong stakeholder engagement skills, including with senior and executive stakeholders, forming, and maintaining positive and supportive working relationships across the agency.    
You will lead a small team, responsible for a range of quality and support activities associated with the Scaled Agile Framework ® (SAFe®) methodology, including Agile Delivery Team  Boards, while managing Program Strategic Risks in the Departments Risk Management System.  Support program planning and reporting in an agile program delivery environment, including regularly reviewing Program performance and acting on emerging risks and issues.  
In this role you will provide analysis on complex issues and contribute to the planning, reporting and co-ordination of Program management.  Delivery of high-quality information, analysis and advice in a timely manner to a range of audiences and contribute to continuous improvement activities and champion opportunities to mature program planning and reporting practices for the Program.  
You will build strong and effective relationships with a range of key internal stakeholders, including collaborating with key stakeholders to identify opportunities, achieve outcomes and facilitate cooperation.  You will prepare and present a range of high quality and precise communication material, including Executive briefings, Committee papers, presentations and reporting obligations.  Contribute to team planning, prioritisation and workflow management and shaping the team’s work program in alignment with the Program objectives.
 
 
Skills and Experience Required:  
  • Experience working in, managing or co-ordinating programs or large projects, preferably using an Agile methodology.    
  • Strong understanding of risk, issue and dependency management methodologies in a program or project management environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to effectively communicate information to a range of audiences. 
  • Strong attention to detail and experience in managing quality assurance (writing, editing, proof reading) of high volumes of correspondence, briefs and reports.  
  • Analysis and investigative skills, gathering information from a variety of sources, exploring new ideas, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement and identifying any critical gaps.  
  • Leadership and people management including the management of recruitment, performance, development, team communication, and ensuring a safe and diverse work environment.
  • Excellent teamwork skills, with the ability to work with colleagues to achieve outcomes. 
  • Experience effectively managing competing priorities and strategic directions, with an ability to remain calm under pressure and respond flexibly to change and uncertainty. 
  • Strategic skills to drive and positively influence team members and stakeholders. 
  • Proven ability to make sensitive and complex decisions using professional judgement within legislative parameters and delegated authority. 
  • Proven ability to act with discretion and integrity in managing sensitive information. 
 
Location and Contract Term: This role is based in Canberra. Contract till September 2026.
