Key duties and responsibilities
The Specified Personnel will be responsible for providing the following deliverables including but not limited to:
- Undertaking the support, management, administration and design of the VMware server and desktop (Horizon) virtual environments in the Australian Secret Network (ASN), Customs Secret Network (CSN) and ABF vessel environments;
- Upgrading, patching, managing, providing customer and internal support, and reviewing and improving the VMware environment design on a regular basis for the delivery of both virtual desktops and servers;
- Installing and configuring ICT hardware, using the VMware tools, services and components to enable several features in various VMware products for better management and seamless user interactions with guest operating systems as required for business as usual (BAU) operations, ICT and business projects;
- Developing and updating ASN VMware environments documentation and CSN as needed;
- Responding promptly to sensitive notices and patching VMware products as required;
- Resolving end user issues and respond to enquiries across ASN, CSN and ABF vessel environments;
- Developing, documenting and implementing VMware infrastructure best practices with automated management solutions to uplift the maturity of platform management and administration processes to improve overall availability, efficiency and security;
- Mentoring and transferring knowledge to other members of the CSD teams to achieve cross-skilling within a APS staffs and contractors workforce;
- Managing multiple tasks with competing priorities and deadlines, engaging in BAU and project activities as required.
Extensive knowledge of the whole VMware product suite, with proven solid experience conducting VMware infrastructure review, developing and implementing improvement plans, developing design, as-built-as-configured and working instructions and other technical documentation, delivering ICT projects, implementing complex changes in the VMware space to improve resilience and availability, coordinating with stakeholders across large organisations. VMware Certification (VMware Certified Professional).
About the project
The successful candidate will be accountable for VMware infrastructure management, maintenance and support. He/she will also be involved with a major ICT uplift of the ASN / CSN VMware infrastructure, involving continuous improvement of the design, performance and reliability.
Essential criteria
1.Availability management: Level 5 (SFIA)
Provides advice and guidance on the planning, design and improvement of service and component availability. Investigates all breaches of availability targets and service non-availability and initiates remedial activities. Develops plans for disaster recovery together with supporting processes. Manages the testing of disaster recovery plans.
2.IT infrastructure: Level 4 (SFIA)
Provides technical expertise to enable the correct application of operational procedures. Contributes to the planning and implementation of infrastructure maintenance and updates. Implements agreed infrastructure changes and maintenance routines. Uses infrastructure management tools to determine load and performance statistics. Configures tools and/or creates scripts to automate the provisioning, testing and deployment of new and changed infrastructure. Maintains operational procedures and checks that they are executed following agreed standards. Investigates and enables the resolution of operational issues. Provides reports and proposals for improvement, to specialists, users and managers.
3.Problem management: Level 4 (SFIA)
Initiates and monitors actions to investigate and resolve problems in systems, processes and services. Determines problem fixes and remedies. Collaborates with others to implemented agreed remedies and preventative measures. Supports analysis of patterns and trends to improve problem management processes.
4.Systems design: Level 5 (SFIA)
Designs large or complex systems and undertakes impact analysis on major design options and trade-offs. Ensures that the system design balances functional and non-functional requirements. Reviews systems designs and ensures that appropriate methods, tools and techniques are applied effectively. Makes recommendations and assesses and manages associated risks. Adopts and adapts system design methods, tools and techniques. Contributes to development of system design policies, standards and selection of architecture components.
5.Systems installation and removal: Level 5 (SFIA)
Takes responsibility for installation and/or decommissioning projects. Provides effective team leadership, including information flow to and from the customer during project work. Develops and implements quality plans and method statements. Monitors the effectiveness of installations and ensures that appropriate recommendations for change are made.
Contract: Contract ASAP with 2 x 12 months extension option
Security Required: Must have a NV1 security Clearance
