About the Role
A major cloud modernisation and transformation program is underway, focused on uplifting secure cloud capabilities across the organisation and the broader NIC.
As a Cloud Solutions Architect, you will design, develop, and implement enterprise‑grade cloud solutions that are scalable, secure, and aligned with complex stakeholder and policy requirements.
You’ll work closely with project teams, development groups, and senior stakeholders to translate high‑level business needs into actionable architecture, ensuring consistency, feasibility, and alignment with broader technical strategies. The role has significant influence across planning, design assurance, and governance processes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing cloud capability roadmaps, models, and plans to drive modernisation and enhance business performance.
- Managing design standards, policies, and patterns to ensure architectural consistency across programs.
- Identifying system and infrastructure interdependencies, resolving technical issues, and advising stakeholders on impacts and risks.
- Producing detailed specifications for proposed solutions and assessing their business implications.
- Monitoring, researching, and recommending emerging cloud technologies to support continuous improvement.
- Taking a lead role in socialising designs and securing endorsement from governance bodies.
The Successful Candidate
Essential
- Strong experience applying government compliance frameworks (e.g., Essential 8, AWS Conformance Packs) and mapping technical controls against them.
- Mastery of Zero Trust Architecture and secure system designs, including “air‑gapped” approaches.
- Deep capability in IAM, including MFA, PAM, and least‑privilege access models.
- Strong proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (IaC), using tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation for repeatable, auditable deployments.
- Knowledge of Cross‑Domain Solutions and secure data movement across classification boundaries.
Desirable
- Experience designing hybrid and multi‑cloud strategies that integrate secure cloud landing zones with legacy on‑premises systems.
Technical Background
- Experience with AWS and Azure cloud platforms.
- Experience designing secure IT cloud systems.
- Minimum 3 years working within a NIC‑aligned environment.
Candidates must also be willing to undergo an Organisational Suitability Assessment (OSA) prior to engagement.

Location: The role is based in Canberra ACT.
Contract terms: 12 months from commencement date, plus potential extensions
SFIA level required: The Specified Person will be expected to demonstrate attributes of SFIA Level of Responsibility 6.
Security Requirements: Current Top-Secret Positive Vetting (TSPV) security clearance is strongly preferred, however candidates who have held a TSPV in the previous 12-month period (which has since been downgraded) may be considered. An OSA(Organisational Suitability Assessment) will be required for this position.
