About the Role
An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Senior Software Engineer to join a highly skilled technical team based in Canberra. In this role, you will take technical ownership across the full software development lifecycle, contributing to the design, development, integration and deployment of complex systems.
You will provide technical leadership, produce high‑quality and secure code, and work closely with other specialists to deliver robust, scalable solutions within a Linux/UNIX environment. The role offers exposure to modern technologies, large‑scale systems, and challenging problem spaces in a secure setting.
 
Key responsibilities include:
  • Leading and contributing to software development activities across multiple projects
  • Designing and building complex software applications and system components
  • Ensuring high standards of software quality, security, and performance
  • Providing specialist technical advice and mentoring to team members
  • Supporting system integration, automation, and continuous integration practices
  • Working collaboratively with stakeholders to balance functional and non‑functional requirements
The Successful Candidate
To be successful in this role, you will be an accomplished software engineer who enjoys working in complex, high‑assurance environments and taking ownership of technical outcomes.
 
You will bring:
  • Strong experience in Java software development
  • Proficiency in Python scripting and experience with C++
  • Experience developing and deploying software in Linux/UNIX environments
  • Solid background in software and systems design within large or complex environments
  • Experience with data manipulation, conversion, and SQL
  • Exposure to tools and platforms such as Cloudera, Apache Airflow, Splunk, OpenSearch/Elastic, Azure, and Atlassian products
  • Experience in cloud and system administration (Linux/Windows)
  • An understanding of cyber security principles and secure software development practices
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to provide specialist technical advice
 
Candidates must also be willing to undergo an Organisational Suitability Assessment (OSA) prior to engagement.

Location: The role is based in Canberra ACT.
Contract terms: 18 months from commencement date, plus 2x 12 month extensions
Experience Level: Senior – EL1 Equivalent
Security Requirements: Current Top-Secret Positive Vetting (TSPV) security clearance is strongly preferred, however candidates who have held a TSPV in the previous 12-month period (which has since been downgraded) may be considered. An OSA(Organisational Suitability Assessment) will be required for this position.
