About the Team

Seeking a dedicated Cloud Security Engineer (AI/ML) to join our dynamic development team that manages solutions on the Departments AWS Cloud Ecosystem. You will be working with a large group of technical specialists across different areas and will be instrumental in designing and implementing security controls for critical cloud solutions.

It is essential that the candidate has experience securing cloud services e.g. managing IAM, hardening infrastructure, implementing security tooling and automation of controls (terraform).

The primary project that you will be working on relates to developing AI tools that augment and enhance staff capabilities.

Established domain knowledge and experience with securing AI products and relevant AWS services is highly desirable.
 

About the Role

Key Responsibilities:

  • Apply AWS security and cloud infrastructure principles, including IAM, network design, encryption, logging, and secure‑by‑design practices, to protect data and systems.
  • Container Image Security – scanning, hardening, base image governance
  • Kubernetes RBAC design and namespace isolation
  • Pod security standards
  • Securing AWS Bedrock
  • Prompt injection and jailbreak mitigation
  • Promote and implement secure cloud architecture best practices, and adoption of modern, automated, and repeatable engineering approaches.
  • Protect AI systems (models, data, infrastructure) from attack, misuse and unintended behaviour
  • Detect and fix cloud misconfigurations and protect and secure platform workloads, data and configurations
  • Ensure all work complies with relevant legislation, policies, requirements, and compliance standards
  • Maintain awareness of emerging AWS services, cloud security tools, and industry trends, and apply relevant innovations to improve organisational capability.
  • Collaborate effectively with delivery teams, platform teams, security teams, and stakeholders to enforce secure cloud practices and alignment with security policies.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with technical and non‑technical stakeholders, including documenting solution designs, and ongoing support procedures.
  • Actively contribute to a positive team culture by mentoring, coaching, and upskilling colleagues in cloud security engineering practices.
  • Participate effectively in Agile delivery environments, contributing to planning, estimation, sprint activities, and continuous improvement within SCRUM or similar frameworks.

Skills and experience:

Mandatory:
  • 5+ years’ experience protecting cloud-based systems from misconfiguration, breaches, and misuse.
  • Hands-on experience protecting AI systems (models, data, infrastructure) from attack, misuse and unintended behaviour
  • Hands‑on experience designing and configuring secure cloud environments with least-privilege access (networks, storage and compute with IAM roles/policies)
  • Strong experience with DevSecOps & automation
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/Ansible) for automation
  • Strong knowledge of AWS security principles and security compliance frameworks e.g. ASD Essential Eight/ISM, ISO27001.
  • Minimum tertiary level qualification in Computer Science, Information Technology or equivalent 
  • Experience with DevOps/GitOps, including CI/CD and version control
 
Desired:
  • AWS Certified Security Specialty (SCS-03) or equivalent
  • Experience working in complex enterprise cloud environments
  • Highly developed problem-solving skills and ability to work independently
  • Experience working in an Agile delivery environment
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
  • Open minded and able to pivot to diverse cloud engineering work
 

Location and Contract Term: This role can be based in Canberra, Newcastle, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne .  12  month contract with 2 x 12- month contract extension options  pending budget and delegate approval.

Security Requirements: Applicants must be Australian Citizens and hold a baseline security clearance.
