About the Role
While managing a small, experienced Finance Team, the Senior Accountant is responsible for the company's financial statements, general ledger, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting and tax compliance.
The Senior Accountant will manage the Finance team for timely processes encompass running reports from MYOB and following up on late payments, assisting with the payments and invoicing process, maintaining company insurances as well as other ad-hoc tasks.
There is also an element of undertaking day to day payroll functions, and evaluating value add services and looking for efficiencies in our business.
Key responsibilities include:
Team Leadership
- Oversee the Finance team and manage workloads and assign activities to team members
- Ensure tasks are completed by defined deadlines – eg taxation reporting, EOFY tasks
- Assist and mentor junior staff in a range of matters, reviewing work and providing technical and non-technical support and leadership.
- Point of contact for the Finance team to assist with any, Executive Management, Recruitment Consultant or other business area’s queries.
Accounting
Manage all accounting transactions:
- Monthly staff Payroll, including leave accruals and balances and processing superannuation.
- Invoicing and payment processing
- Ensure timely bank payments.
- Taxation (Payroll Tax, GST, Company Tax, BAS, IAS, PAYG, FBT, TPAR)
- End of Month reconciliations, prepare journals for adjustments.
- Maintain Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss Statement
- Manage the preparation of the Management Quarterly Reports, Budget Report and Annual Financial Reports
- Prepare budget forecasts
- Salary Sacrifice arrangements, including novated lease, LAFHA and etc.
- Manage external auditing and assign tasks to team members.
Business Compliance
- State and territory Licencing and understanding requirements for State conditions to operate
- State and territory Payroll Taxes and understanding requirements for State conditions to operate
- State and territory Insurances and understanding requirements for State conditions to operate
- There may be a requirement to understand operating conditions in other countries.
Business Proficiencies
- Advise on new business lines to support new business verticals in Accounting and Finance
Support to Business Operations
- Understanding of Clients timesheet, invoice and travel procedures.
- Understanding of contractor engagements – PAYG, ABN or Partner Company set ups.
- Maintain an overview of monthly activities, late timesheets, overdue or issues with client payments, monitor hours balances etc.
Other Tasks
- Monitor and take appropriate action on shared admin account emails.
- Willingness to travel within Canberra and interstate if required on occasion.
- Other varied tasks as required.
The Successful Candidate
To excel in this role, you will need:
- Accountant certification – preferably CA or CPA
- 5+ years previous accounting experience in small/medium business
- Understanding of Finance processes and accounting software such as MYOB (desirable)
- Strong Excel Spreadsheet ability
- High level of attention to detail
- Ability to work under pressure and within tight deadlines
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written and the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, and clients.
- Able to maintain autonomy and discipline in an unsupervised environment.
- Have a commitment to continuous improvement and quality policies and procedures
- Have a commitment to teamwork and co-operative work practices
- Be available to liaise with other staff online via instant messaging and emails sometimes after hours.
- Be responsible for maintaining laptop and other office equipment.
