The end client is a large banking organisation operating core mainframe system that underpin critical business operations. This role supports the ongoing availability, performance, and strategic evolution of IMS database environments within a highly complex and business‑critical technology landscape.
About the Role
An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced IMS Database Administrator (IMS DBA) to provide senior‑level technical consultation and leadership across IMS database management, performance tuning, and availability.
Reporting into a core systems team, you will act as a subject matter expert for IMS Full Function and Fast Path databases, providing deep technical guidance, mentoring junior staff, and working closely with application, storage, and infrastructure teams.
This is a contract role likely to be 6 months or longer, with Melbourne preferred, though remote or hybrid arrangements may be considered for the right candidate.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Provide expert technical leadership across all aspects of IMS database usage, performance, tuning, and monitoring.
- Act as a senior escalation point for complex IMS performance, availability, and recovery issues.
- Mentor and guide junior IMS DBAs and technical staff.
- Lead and implement new IMS database functionality in partnership with application development teams.
- Support day‑to‑day IMS database operations including availability, throughput, recovery, and performance.
- Provide expert diagnosis and resolution of complex technical issues across IMS subsystems.
- Ensure high levels of stability, usability, and performance across production environments.
- Participate in a 24×7 on‑call support roster to support IMS‑based applications.
- Liaise closely with application development, storage, infrastructure, and other mainframe technology teams.
- Provide clear guidance and communication to business and technical managers regarding platform risks and service issues.
- Educate customers and IT staff on best‑practice use of IMS databases within runtime environments.
- Contribute to strategic and tactical planning for the mainframe platform.
- Identify and implement initiatives to improve service levels, reduce costs, and increase platform stability.
- Support performance optimisation and future‑proofing of IMS database technologies.
- Extensive experience in IMS Database Administration, including:
- Availability and capacity planning
- Performance tuning
- Backup, recovery, and data integrity
- Security and access controls
- Expert knowledge of IMS Full Function and Fast Path databases.
- Strong understanding of IBM z/OS operating system.
- Experience with IBM and BMC IMS database utilities.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively across large enterprise environments.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong customer focus and ability to translate business requirements into cost‑effective technical solutions.
- Demonstrated experience driving platform improvements and supporting change initiatives.
- IMS DBA experience within banking or financial services environments.
- Broader understanding of end‑to‑end enterprise technology services, including:
- Mainframe applications
- Storage and data platforms
- Network and communications technologies
- Exposure to project management methodologies.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications.
- Long‑term contract opportunity (6 months+) supporting enterprise‑critical mainframe platforms.
