The Role:
We are seeking a hands-on IT Architect to lead a strategic initiative focused on assessing and modernising DevOps practices within the Departments mainframe environment.
The successful candidate will:
• Engage with mainframe development and platform support teams to assess DevOps maturity.
• Map current development processes and identify developer pain points.
• Recommend and support the implementation of modernised tooling and processes to improve developer experience and delivery efficiency.
• Document current and future state architectures and process flows.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to define and deliver pragmatic, iterative solutions aligned with enterprise architecture standards.
As a secondary priority, the role may also contribute to automation initiatives supporting secrets and password rotation across AWS Secrets Manager and Azure Key Vault, or establishing an Internal Developer Portal.
Skills and Experience Required:
• Proven experience as a Solution or IT Architect in large enterprise environments.
• Hands-on delivery experience with:
o z/OS mainframes and mainframe modernisation.
o DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines (preferably Azure DevOps or Ansible).
• Strong documentation skills for current/future state architectures and process flows.
• Ability to identify and resolve developer pain points through automation and tooling.
• Experience with secrets management and key rotation practices is a plus.
• Familiarity with test automation or internal developer portals is desirable.
Location and Contract Term: This role is based in Canberra and multiple locations. 6 month contract with 3 x 6-month extension option pending budget and delegate approval.
