Linux Engineer

About the Client
Our client is a large Australian Government organisation undertaking a significant uplift of their technology environment. They are expanding their technical team and require an experienced Linux Engineer to support the development, integration, maintenance, and operational readiness of a key enterprise system. You’ll be joining a highly skilled group working on complex systems within a secure and structured environment.

About the Role
In this role, you will contribute to the design, build, integration, administration, and support of Linux‑based capabilities within a virtualised environment. You will play a key part in uplifting the system into production, ensuring compliance, reliability, and seamless integration with broader enterprise systems.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Designing and documenting system components and technical configurations.
  • Reviewing and advising on interfacing system designs.
  • Developing, maintaining, and integrating software components and applications.
  • Automating installation and configuration processes.
  • Building, administering, and supporting production Linux nodes.
  • Creating and maintaining configuration baselines and system documentation.
  • Developing SOPs, technical artefacts, and training materials.
  • Providing Level 3 support for production systems.
  • Implementing and managing patch cycles and update schedules.
  • Transferring knowledge to operational support teams.
The Successful Candidate
The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in Linux system engineering, automation, and system administration, ideally within complex or secure environments.

You will have:
  • 8+ years of experience in software development or systems engineering.
  • Experience developing software for Linux operating systems.
  • Strong background in Linux server administration and hardening.
  • Experience automating installation and configuration tasks.
  • Experience developing and maintaining Linux SOE images.
  • Ability to write clear, high‑quality technical documentation.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and methodologies.
  • Ability to provide balanced technical advice aligned to broader business requirements.
Highly regarded but not essential:
  • Experience working with deployable or distributed communication and information systems.
  • Understanding of systems engineering processes.
  • Experience working within Agile frameworks.
  • Experience developing automation using Ansible.
  • Knowledge of OpenStack.
  • Experience developing or maintaining Windows SOEs.

Security Requirements:
To be eligible for this role, you  must be an Australian Citizen. Due to the work environment, our client has requested that all candidates are required to hold  current NV2 Security Clearance.
