Mainframe Developer

About the Team

Mainframe application team is responsible for supporting and developing Mainframe services for the Departments online portal. The team is in Canberra and is comprised of 2 mainframe developers. 

About the Role

As a Mainframe application developer, you will, as a senior team member, undertake the more complex tasks involved in the provision of an information system to client areas of the Department. This may include involvement in all phases of the system life cycle including analysis, design, development, implementation, maintenance, and administrative tasks. In most cases, the work of a Mainframe application developer will contribute significantly to the success of a larger project in a Release Train.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate within cross-functional Agile teams to design, develop, test, and maintain scalable and secure IT applications.
  • Deliver high-quality software solutions that align with business objectives and user needs.
  • Provide technical support and implement small to medium-scale change initiatives.
  • Take the initiative to undertake problem solving and incident resolution and demonstrate an understanding of change control and release management procedures.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of development practices, tools, and processes.
  • Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and retrospectives to ensure quality and alignment with Agile principles.
  • Share knowledge and mentor junior developers, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation.
  • As a Mainframe application developer in the team, you will be required to provide high level advice on analysis and design options, accept responsibility for analysing and designing existing/new systems including developing and specifying system requirements and develop strategies for testing design options. You also will be required to provide high level advice to management to assist in the resolution of design issues which may impact on system performance and reliability.

Practical experience using information system development processes and methodologies in a Scaled Agile Framework methodology environment including:

  • Identifying and defining user requirements
  • System analysis and design
  • Function and data design
  • Code deployment and testing
  • Assisting in preparation of functional specifications
  • Preparation of end user and technical documentation
Highly developed oral and written communication skills sufficient to:

  • Deal effectively with business clients, at a variety of levels
  • Maintain good client relationships and represent DDS Mainframe applications team in a professional manner
  • Communicate project issues with and present progress reports to clients
  • Effectively transfer skills
Proven organisational skills and a demonstrated capacity to undertake and manage project work in a team environment. Proven initiative, self-reliance, attention to detail, and capacity to work with minimal supervision and a demonstrated ability to work under pressure on a wide range of different tasks and competing priorities to satisfy deadlines.

Location and Contract Term: This role can be based in Canberra .  12  month contract with 2 x 12- month contract extension options  pending budget and delegate approval.

Security Requirements: Applicants must be Australian Citizens and hold a baseline security clearance.
