The end client is a large, highly regulated organisation operating complex mainframe environments that underpin core business operations. This role supports the ongoing security, stability, and evolution of critical z/OS platforms, with a strong focus on risk management, compliance, and operational excellence.

About the Role

An exciting opportunity exists for a highly experienced Senior Mainframe Systems Programmer & Security Specialist to provide deep technical leadership across mainframe systems, RACF security, and enterprise risk controls.

This is a senior, hands‑on role requiring strong judgement, broad technical expertise, and the ability to act as a trusted advisor to stakeholders across technology, audit, and business teams. You will play a key role in maintaining system integrity while supporting continuous improvement and modernisation initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert‑level support across mainframe systems and security, ensuring operational integrity and compliance.
  • Design, implement, and maintain secure, resilient technical solutions aligned to enterprise strategy.
  • Lead and assure technical designs for major system components and initiatives.
  • Provide security best practice across RACF and mainframe environments.
  • Support change management activities including requirements validation, design decisions, testing, and quality assurance.
  • Identify and implement process improvement and risk reduction initiatives.
  • Conduct technical evaluations of tools, products, and methods to support business needs.
  • Actively engage with audit and compliance teams and deliver remediation outcomes as required.
  • Mentor and support junior technical staff.
  • Engage with stakeholders as a trusted advisor across technology and business functions.
Required Skills & Experience

Experience

  • 15+ years’ experience working within enterprise mainframe environments.
  • 5+ years’ experience in a mainframe security role, with strong RACF expertise.
  • Experience within financial services or similarly regulated industries.
Technical Skills

  • z/OS software installation and configuration
  • Advanced Assembler
  • Advanced JCL
  • SMP/E, REXX, RACF
  • SAS programming
  • ISPF, ISPF Dialog Management Services
  • SDSF
  • Audit, risk, and controls exposure
  • Programming experience in one or more of:
    • Python
    • PL/I
    • COBOL
  • Experience with:
    • Storage management (DASD & Tape)
    • DB2
    • Performance monitoring tools
