An opportunity exists for a Microsoft SQL Database Administrator (DBA) on a fixed-term role to join a large, Australian‑based organisation operating nationally across the transport and logistics ecosystem. Technology is a core enabler of the business, supporting high‑availability platforms, data integrity, and secure systems that underpin critical, customer‑facing operations.
Purpose of the Role
The Microsoft SQL Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for the operational management, availability, performance, security, and continuous improvement of enterprise SQL Server database environments.
This fixed-term role will support both business‑as‑usual operations and key technology initiatives, ensuring database platforms remain stable, secure, and optimised to support critical, customer‑facing and internal systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Database Administration & Operations
- Administer, maintain, and support Microsoft SQL Server environments across on‑premises and/or cloud platforms.
- Ensure high availability, reliability, and optimal performance of database systems.
- Monitor database health and proactively identify and resolve issues.
- Manage database backup, restore, and disaster recovery processes.
- Diagnose and resolve database performance and capacity issues.
- Optimise queries, indexes, and database structures.
- Collaborate with application development teams to improve database design and performance.
- Support database changes, upgrades, and patching in line with change management processes.
- Plan and execute database migrations with minimal business disruption.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, procedures, and runbooks.
- Support SQL Server technologies including:
- Always On Availability Groups
- Replication
- SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
- SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), where applicable
- Assist with cloud database platforms such as Azure SQL or Managed Instances, where applicable.
- Implement and maintain database security controls, including permissions, encryption, and auditing.
- Ensure compliance with internal governance, data protection, and regulatory requirements.
- Support internal and external audits and vulnerability remediation activities.
- Contribute to business continuity and disaster recovery planning.
- Work closely with infrastructure, data, applications, and vendor teams.
- Provide expert technical advice to internal stakeholders.
- Participate in scheduled or on‑call support as required.
Key Skills & Experience:
Essential
- Proven experience as a Microsoft SQL Server Database Administrator.
- Strong hands-on experience with SQL Server (2016+ preferred).
- Experience designing and supporting high‑availability and disaster recovery solutions.
- Advanced T‑SQL skills for performance tuning and troubleshooting.
- Experience supporting mission‑critical, transactional database systems.
- Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
- Experience within insurance, financial services, or regulated industries.
- Exposure to Azure SQL or hybrid cloud environments.
- Experience with database automation, DevOps, or CI/CD pipelines.
- Knowledge of data security, compliance, and governance frameworks.
Qualifications
- Tertiary qualification in Information Technology, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
- Microsoft SQL Server or Azure certifications (desirable).
