The Database Administrator is responsible for the operation, stability and continuous improvement of enterprise Microsoft SQL Server platforms supporting critical government systems. The role is heavily focused on high availability (HA), reliability and cluster‑based architectures, ensuring database services remain resilient, performant and secure across multiple security domains.
The role provides hands‑on DBA support for large‑scale SQL Server environments and plays a key role in modernisation, consolidation and uplift activities, including platform upgrades and resilience improvements.
Key duties and responsibilities:
- Administer and support a large‑scale Microsoft SQL Server environment across multiple security domains.
- Ensure availability, performance and stability of SQL Server instances supporting mission‑critical applications.
- Proactively monitor database health and performance, identifying and remediating issues before service impact occurs.
- Support business‑as‑usual database operations including backups, restores, patching and maintenance.
- Design, implement and maintain high‑availability SQL Server solutions, including clustered and multi‑node architectures.
- Support and maintain SQL Server Failover Clustering and other HA configurations.
- Conduct resilience testing, failover validation and recovery exercises to ensure service continuity.
- Troubleshoot complex availability and clustering issues across on‑premises environments.
- Lead or support upgrades and migrations from legacy SQL Server versions to SQL Server 2019 and 2022.
- Contribute to SQL Server consolidation activities to improve resilience and reduce operational and licensing costs.
- Optimise SQL Server configurations for performance, availability and reliability.
- Apply security best practices in line with government and ASD requirements.
- Support SQL Server security configuration, patching and vulnerability remediation.
- Ensure databases operate securely across both low‑side and high‑side environments.
Skills and Experience Required:
Demonstrated experience administering enterprise Microsoft SQL Server environments at scale. • Strong expertise in SQL Server high availability and clustering technologies. • Proven experience supporting mission critical, highly available database services. • Experience performing SQL Server upgrades, migrations and consolidation activities. • Strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills focused on availability and reliability.
Location and Contract Term: This role can be based in the ACT. Hybrid working arrangements, 3 days in office/2 days WFH. 12 month contract with 2 x 12 month contract extension options pending budget and delegate approval.
Security Requirements: Applicants must be Australian Citizens and hold a NV1 security clearance.
