The Senior Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, and sustainment of enterprise infrastructure platforms across on‑premises and cloud environments. The role provides technical leadership across server, storage, backup, virtualisation and core platform services, and plays a key role in improving resilience, security, and operational efficiency of critical government systems.
This role works closely with cloud, database, network, and security specialists, and supports major refresh and transformation activities while ensuring day‑to‑day services remain stable and well‑managed
Key duties and responsibilities
Infrastructure Platforms
- Design, build and maintain enterprise Windows Server and infrastructure services.
- Administer and optimise virtualised environments (VMware ESXi) and associated hardware platforms.
- Manage enterprise storage and backup platforms, including capacity planning, recovery testing, and failover readiness.
- Maintain platform documentation, standards, and operational procedures.
- Lead infrastructure resilience improvements including redundancy, failover, and disaster recovery.
- Investigate and remediate incidents impacting availability or performance of critical systems.
- Apply security hardening, patching, and vulnerability remediation in line with government security requirements.
- Work closely with cyber and identity teams on certificate services, privileged access, and secure system design.
- Support and operate limited hybrid workloads that integrate on‑premises infrastructure with Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 services.
- Provide infrastructure input to cloud migration activities, ensuring on‑prem dependencies and impacts are understood and managed.
- Support optimisation, stability and security of hybrid services rather than acting as a primary cloud engineering function.
- Use automation and scripting to improve reliability and repeatability across on‑prem and hybrid infrastructure where appropriate.
- Provide senior technical guidance and mentoring to infrastructure engineers.
- Act as a key escalation point for complex technical issues.
- Contribute to architecture decisions, designs and technical roadmaps.
- Support change and release activities, ensuring risk is well understood and managed.
- IT infrastructure: Level 4 (SFIA)
- Systems installation and removal: Level 5 (SFIA)
Contract: 12 Months Contract with 2 x 12 month extensions
Security Required: NV1 Security Clearance required
Location - Canberra Hybrid - 3 days a week in the office
