About the Client
Our client is a high‑profile, Canberra‑based Australian Government organisation operating at the forefront of national security, cyber capability and intelligence. The organisation plays a critical role in protecting Australia’s interests through advanced technology, secure systems, and mission‑critical operations. Due to the sensitive nature of the work, this role requires the highest levels of professionalism, discretion, and technical capability.

About the Role
The System Administrator will work as part of a specialised technical team responsible for the ongoing sustainment, performance, and availability of a Microsoft SQL Server database environment and its associated virtual server fleet.
This role involves administering SQL Server platforms across multiple environments (production, QA, and test), managing backup, recovery, migration and restoration activities, and proactively monitoring and tuning database performance. The successful candidate will also contribute to scripting and automation initiatives to improve system reliability and efficiency, while ensuring documentation and record‑keeping standards are met.
The engagement is a 12‑month contract with the potential for two 12‑month extensions, based in Canberra (ACT), with flexibility in working arrangements subject to operational requirements.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Evaluating, testing, and implementing system updates, patches, and new software releases
  • Managing database backup, recovery, migration, and restoration requests
  • Monitoring system and database performance and undertaking proactive tuning
  • Developing and maintaining scripts and automation (e.g. PowerShell)
  • Supporting SQL Server technologies, including Always On Availability Groups
  • Maintaining accurate technical documentation and operational procedures
  • Working collaboratively with technical teams and stakeholders

The Successful Candidate
To be successful in this role, you will be an experienced System Administrator with strong Microsoft SQL Server expertise and a background working in complex, secure ICT environments.
You will demonstrate:
  • Intermediate hands‑on experience administering Microsoft SQL Server, including Always On Availability Groups
  • Experience using scripting languages (such as PowerShell) to automate and streamline database administration tasks
  • Exposure to Agile or Scrum delivery methodologies
  • Familiarity with version control and CI/CD tools (e.g. Git)
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to investigate and resolve complex technical issues
  • Clear documentation and communication skills
 
Candidates must also be willing to undergo an Organisational Suitability Assessment (OSA) prior to engagement.

Location: The role is based in Canberra ACT.
Contract terms: 12 months from commencement date, plus 2x 12 month extensions
Experience Level: APS6 Equivalent
Security Requirements: Current Top-Secret Positive Vetting (TSPV) security clearance is strongly preferred, however candidates who have held a TSPV in the previous 12-month period (which has since been downgraded) may be considered. An OSA(Organisational Suitability Assessment) will be required for this position.
