Team Leader – Debt Management

About the Role: The Debt Management team is responsible for effectively managing and recovering tax debts while safeguarding the integrity of the taxation system. Core responsibilities include developing and implementing recovery strategies, educating clients about their obligations, and engaging proactively with taxpayers to address compliance issues. By leveraging advanced data analytics, the team identifies trends and optimises recovery approaches, delivering benefits to both the community and its residents.
Beyond debt recovery, the unit also manages accounts administration, ensuring accurate financial records, monitoring outstanding accounts, and overseeing payment arrangements. The overarching goal is to reduce overall tax debt while building positive relationships with taxpayers through transparent communication and supportive engagement.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead, coach and develop a team of debt management and account administration officers to ensure consistent, high-quality service delivery.
  • Oversee daily workflows, allocate tasks, and monitor workload distribution across debt recovery and account administration functions.
  • Manage escalations and complex matters in a challenging operational and regulatory environment, demonstrating sound judgement, resilience and professionalism under pressure.
  • Review and authorise complex recovery actions including payment arrangements, garnishees, and legal referrals, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements and organisational policy.
  • Monitor and report on debt recovery performance, identifying emerging risks, trends, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of debt recovery strategies, frameworks, and escalation pathways.
  • Oversee the accuracy and integrity of taxpayer accounts, ensuring correct application of payments, adjustments, and account reconciliations.
  • Provide expert advice on the interpretation and application of relevant tax legislation and procedural guidance.
 
The Successful Candidate:
  • Debt recovery knowledge: Experience with recovery processes, including payment arrangements, garnishees, and legal referrals.
  • Regulatory compliance: Deep understanding of legislative requirements and organisational policies governing debt management.
  • Performance monitoring: Ability to track, analyse, and report on debt recovery outcomes, identifying risks and opportunities.
  • Strategic contribution: Skills to design and implement frameworks, strategies, and escalation pathways that improve efficiency.
  • Data-driven decision-making: Competence in using analytics to identify trends and optimise recovery approaches.
  • Financial accuracy: Attention to detail in overseeing accounts, ensuring correct application of payments, adjustments, and reconciliations.
  • Legislative expertise: Ability to interpret and apply tax legislation, providing authoritative advice to stakeholders.
What is on offer
Hourly Rate:  $58.00 – 76.00 per hour, plus super
Location and Contract Term: 
This role is based in Canberra. 6-month contract.
Security Requirements: 
Applicants must have full work rights and pass a National Police Check.
